The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians Partners with American Geriatrics Society and Jones & Bartlett Learning to Develop Second Edition of Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services

Jones & Bartlett Learning (JB Learning) announced today that the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) will partner with the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) to develop the second edition of the market-leading Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) continuing education course to train prehospital professionals to deliver state-of-the-art care to geriatric patients.

JB Learning, the AGS, and NAEMT will collaborate on the publication of a new Second Edition course to help prehospital professionals to better assess and manage ill, injured, or disabled geriatric patients.

NAEMT President Don Lundy noted, “The GEMS course provides high quality, relevant training for all EMS practitioners. We look forward to working with JBL and AGS to enhance the course and increase access to it across the country. This course will have tremendous value to EMS agencies establishing Mobile Integrated Healthcare programs.”

GEMS has had and will continue to have a profound impact on the care of older people in the prehospital setting. The GEMS, Second Edition course is being developed through a consensus of experts in emergency medical services and geriatric medicine,” said David Snyder, lead author and co-chair of the GEMS Steering Committee.

“The partnership with NAEMT is in keeping with the AGS’s longstanding commitment to improving geriatric care in distinct, meaningful ways,” said Jennie Chin Hansen, CEO of the American Geriatrics Society. “The Second Edition of the GEMS course will help ensure that older adults receive the specialized treatment they require from prehospital professionals in the critical moments when geriatric skills are needed most.”

Scheduled to launch in September 2014, GEMS, Second Edition will be available as a fully integrated, interactive training program. The course will address a broad range of topics specifically geared toward EMS providers and will be highly interactive with online content, hands-on skills, and case-based lectures.

“Jones & Bartlett Learning is very excited at the prospect of developing GEMS, Second Edition with two of the leading organizations in EMS and two of our most prestigious publishing partners,” said Kimberly Brophy, Executive Publisher at Jones & Bartlett Learning. “This collaboration reinforces our commitment to publishing superior programs for prehospital professionals.”
