Opinion: EMS ought to come from those who care

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, emergency medical knowledge and technology began to make great strides in helping the critically ill and injured. The Los Angeles and Seattle fire departments were among the first to initiate advanced life support in the streets and homes of their residents.

Stockton firefighters began discussing the ways and means advanced life support could be provided to Stockton and the adjacent areas. Citizen committees, social groups and churches began talking about advanced life support.

In 1975, the Stockton Fire Department had the opportunity to respond to the need and concerns of the residents. In 1976, three paramedic squads were established to serve the people. Residents rallied to raise funds to offset costs.
