APPLE VALLEY, Calif. — A hit-and-run accident involving an ambulance and an SUV sent two people to the hospital Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
An American Medical Response ambulance was responding to a medical emergency when they approached the intersection of Rock Springs and Deep Creek roads and were struck by a Chevy Tahoe SUV, according to Apple Valley Fire Protection District Chief Sid Hultquist.
The impact, which occurred around 1:30 p.m., disabled the ambulance and caused injuries to both the driver and the paramedic in the passenger’s seat.
The driver of the SUV jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Hultquist said that as of 2:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol officials had not yet found the driver.
The paramedic was flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, while the ambulance driver was transported by the AMR supervisor with minor injuries, Hultquist said.
Hultquist said the accident was a very close call from being fatal, and encourages drivers to be sure and use caution and pull over when they see an ambulance with sirens on.
The accident remains under investigation by CHP.
