ANDERSON, S.C. — An ambulance crew found a very active patient Tuesday when responding to a call involving a 41-year-old woman who was reportedly experiencing chest pains.

The would-be patient jumped in a Kia sport utility vehicle and rammed into the Medshore Ambulance Service vehicle when it arrived at 201 Durseycq Drive around 11 a.m., officials said.

The woman then got out of the Kia and got behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry and chased an emergency medical technician, knocking down several mailboxes in the process.

“He is lucky that he is alive,” said Scott Stoller, Anderson County’s director of emergency medical services and special operations.

Anderson County sheriff’s deputies eventually were called to the upscale neighborhood where the woman lives, which is off Ashley Road between S.C. 81 and Concord Road. After a brief chase, they managed to pin the woman’s vehicle in her yard, sheriff’s spokesman Chad McBride said.

The woman was placed in custody and then taken to AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson, where she was being treated Tuesday afternoon.

Charges are pending against the woman, McBride said. He also said that her identity will not be released until she is formally arrested.
