YORK COUNTY, Pa. — The York County Department of Emergency Services is starting a campaign designed to get responders to the scene of an emergency as efficiently as possible.

The key: Making sure people who call 911 have the information dispatchers need.

The York County Commissioners approved a contract to rent six billboards throughout the county for $2,000.

The billboards will remind people, particularly children, to know their address, municipality and phone number.

Dispatchers get physical addresses when a person dials 911 from a landline. If the person, however, dials using a cell phone, dispatchers pinpoint the address using latitude and longitude, county spokesman Carl Lindquist said.

Knowing an exact address can get emergency responders to the location more efficiently, he added.

The billboards will remain up for 30 days during the campaign.
