N.Y. volunteer ambulance may shut down

Declining volunteers may force the service to close after more than five decades

SLATERVILLE, N.Y. — Slaterville’s volunteer ambulance service is at risk of shutting down after 2015.

The company has served the community for more than five decades, but volunteer numbers have been declining for years and the core group of aging members say they can’t carry the burden much longer.

Every year, the Town of Caroline signs a contract with the Slaterville Volunteer Ambulance, currently for $55,000, which covers the insurance, fuel and maintenance for the vehicle, training and equipment not provided by a hospital, longtime volunteer Beth Harrington said.
