PIKESVILLE, Md. — Six weeks after losing a pilot and medic in a crash of a helicopter, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command has lost another member to a tragic accident. Flight paramedic, First Sergeant Tobin Triebel, died after being hit by a truck while he was jogging in North Carolina on Friday morning.

Triebel, who also had been a paramedic with the DC Fire & EMS department, died Friday night after being flown to a trauma center in Chapel Hill.

The 39-year-old Triebel joined the Maryland State Police thirteen years ago. His most recent assignment was as supervisor for the training section for the Aviation Command. Triebel became a flight paramedic in 1986.

Tobin Triebel lived in New Market, Maryland with his wife Susan and teenaged daughters Hanna and Erika.

Triebel was an avid rugby player with the Frederick Rugby Football Club.

Triebel’s death comes on the heels of the September 27 crash of a Maryland State Police helicopter in Prince George’s County that killed the flight crew and two others.

Since 1972 Dave Statter has covered the news. A good deal of Dave’s reporting has focused on how fire and emergency medical services are delivered in and around Washington and Baltimore. Along the way, Dave was also a volunteer firefighter, an emergency dispatcher and a cardiac rescue technician.
