24 Wis. EMTs could lose jobs with potential EMS transfer

Under the model, officials would use current paramedics, but there’s no role for the employed EMTs

HUDSON, Wis. — More than 20 EMTs could lose their jobs if city officials decide to transfer EMS service.

Hudson Star Observer reported that negotiations are still ongoing and no decision has been made yet. Under the model, Hudson Hospital would use the two-paramedic model that other organizations use. They would offer all current St. Croix EMS paramedics employment, but there’s no role for current EMTs.

EMT Pam Dabruzzi said she was shocked that the staff wasn’t informed earlier.

“I take this as a slap in the face to myself personally that this is how we find out,” she said.

Officials with Hudson Hospital and HealthPartners said they would be willing to train current EMTs to become paramedics.

“We want to have a successful EMS system,” council member Tom McCormick said.

McCormick said the city approved retention bonuses for most of the EMS staff, which would provide incentive for personnel to stay and continue to operate if the transfer is approved.
