EMS discounts: Where to find

EMS discounts are frequently offered for things like auto and homeowner insurance, mobile phone service, and auto servicing

One of the perks of being an EMS professional is getting EMS discounts that are offered from a variety of merchants. Discounts are generally offered to EMS personnel, as well as to military and public service workers, such as police and firefighters.

EMS discounts are frequently offered for things like auto and homeowner insurance, mobile phone service, and auto servicing. Discounts can be anywhere from 10% and up. It is up to you to find out who gives discounts to EMS professionals, as oftentimes you will not find out otherwise, unless you read the fine print of their contracts. Usually, merchants will want proof of employment via your official ID or badge.

EMS discounts are also made available through cruise lines, who offer reduced rates for public service personnel and military.

Royal Caribbean, Oceania Cruises, Holland America and Costa Cruises are some of the lines that offer discounts. As noted above, you will need to provide proof of EMS employment at the time you book your cruise.

EMS discounts are often given by sporting goods stores like Cabela’s at certain times of the year. Check ads and bulletins, which are sent out to EMS providers at sale times to take advantage of saving money on equipment and gear.

Hospitals also give EMS discounts to workers, allowing them to eat at a reduced rate in their cafeterias and snack bars. Some hospitals even allow EMS personnel to eat for free. However, you must be on duty and in uniform to participate in these EMS discounts.

Local merchants who do not necessarily have a policy for giving EMS discounts will often comp a cup of coffee or give a discount on meals to EMS workers who are in uniform at the time of purchase.

However, it is bad form to ask for discounts from small businesses who are trying to make a living. Do not abuse your uniform by asking for a discount, but graciously accept it if it is offered and be sure to thank the clerk, manager or business owner for the freebie.
