VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A crash involving a car and school bus left nine people injured Tuesday.
Police said they received a call around 3:40 p.m. for the crash in the 700 block of Jericho Road, near North Witchduck Road.
Eight of the nine people were taken to a hospital with injuries. Two were from the car involved. Those injuries were serious but not life threatening, said Bruce Nedelka, EMS division chief.
The other six came from the school bus – five students and the driver. All had minor injuries, Nedelka said.
The bus was taking 29 students home from the Bayside Sixth Grade Campus, said Eileen Cox, a Virginia Beach public schools spokesperson.
Austin White, a fifth grader at Luxford Elementary, said he was watching television when he heard a “big boom” outside.
He rushed out to see the front end of the car destroyed and the bus damaged.
Nearby, Mark Adams was in his kitchen when he heard what sounded like an explosion.
“You knew it was bad once you heard the noise,” Adams said.
Adams ran outside to see the car smashed, as if it had driven partially under the bus.
Adams ran to see if he could help anyone on the bus while his roommate Lisa Hallak called 911. They said several ambulances, fire trucks and other emergency personnel arrived quickly.
“It was chaos at the beginning,” Adams said. “It was not something you want to see.”
Hallak said her children are grown, but seeing the wreckage still shook her.
”As a parent or grandparent, it’s scary,” she said.
Police are investigating.
