ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. — EMT Shannon Muttram held back tears as she looked over the piece of paper she had used to track a victims’ vital signs during the nation’s worst mass shooting in modern American history. The memories coming back to Muttram on Thursday night, Nov. 30, weren’t only of the people she helped — she and her boyfriend, fellow EMT Colby Jackson, were also shot.

The couple, who met while being employed as EMTs by Care Ambulance Service in Orange, were on a date at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1.

As the first shots rang out, Jackson was hit in the arm, and his girlfriend took shrapnel in the back. Jackson’s first instinct was to lay on top of Muttram to protect her. They eventually made their way to a first-aid tent where they met up with Las Vegas paramedic Callen Daquioag.

Daquioag transported them and two other victims to a local hospital. While in the ambulance, and despite being shot, Muttram and Jackson helped Daquioag take care of other victims. Care Ambulance awarded the trio their highest award — The Medal of Valor — during the company’s annual awards ceremony Thursday.
