MILWAUKEE — A paramedic was attacked by five teens in his garage Monday as he was preparing to leave for work.

Ben Hampe told WISN he was getting into his vehicle when he noticed an SUV near his garage. He was then hit in the back of the head. One assailant attempted to hit Hampe with a 70-pound car jack, which he dodged while rolling on the ground.

While he lay on the ground, the attackers ransacked his vehicle. At one point, Hampe held onto the grill of the SUV as the driver attempted to run him over. Although the assailants escaped, Hampe sustained cuts, bruises and drag marks on his elbow and hips.

Despite hearing his attackers urging one another to kill Hampe, he knew dying was not an option; Hampe is a single parent.

“I just knew if I gave up, my son wouldn’t have a dad anymore,” Hampe said. “So, I just knew I couldn’t stop fighting.”

Police are investigating the incident.
