SAN ANTONIO — It was lunchtime when Jasiah Rubalcava noticed his friend choking on a nacho chip. Soon Nicholas Carvajal was clutching his neck and turning red. Jasiah raced around the table and performed the Heimlich maneuver, which loosened the chip enough for Nicholas to cough — and breathe.
The difference between Jasiah and other Heimlich heroes is that he is 6, a kindergartener at West Avenue Elementary, who can’t yet pronounce the name of the technique. With a dimpled grin, he calls it the “heiniper” and says he learned it watching shows on the Disney Channel.Nicholas, also 6, is his classmate and best friend.
Acadian Ambulance Service execs heard about Jasiah’s act of heroism earlier this month and decided to honor the little guy Friday with an award they typically give to emergency medical personnel or firefighters.
