Response-time goals elude Canadian paramedics

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Paramedic Service is not meeting the city’s response times for life-threatening calls, inevitably putting lives at risk, a year-end report says.

The standard adopted by the city is that 90 per cent of the time, paramedics respond to a life-threatening call in 8 minutes 59 seconds in the urban area of the city — which accounts for nearly all calls.

But overwhelmed by population growth and a massive increase in calls since amalgamation, paramedic response times are longer. Last year, getting to 90 per cent of their calls took paramedics 13 minutes and 13 seconds.
