INDIA — Looking at the increasing rate of accidental deaths in the country, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) — an organisation representing over 41,000 doctors of Indian origin in practice and settled in the US — has decided to bring state-wide emergency medical systems (EMS) to India.
Besides, an EMS council is expected to be formed which would exclusively focus on promoting emergency medical services by mid-2006.
Announcing this, Dr Balasubramaniam, treasurer of AAPI, said there is a need for quicker transport to prevent pre-hospital deaths. The proposed EMS would initially focus on select states and later expand to other parts, he said. As a step towards this, a network of emergency care centres with a single access number providing quality emergency care is being designed.
