HERMITAGE, Pa. — After a patient died during a call, an ambulance agency was given Hope — literally.

Several months ago, Elite Ambulance crews responded to a house call where a patient died, reported the New Castle News. Crews discovered that the patient’s Australian cattle dog was now without an owner.

“The parents did not even know he [the patient] had a dog,” Courtney Ivan, co-owner of the service, said. “They were going to euthanize her.”

Although the service already had a station dog, Humphrey, they decided to bring Hope home with them. Crews discovered that Hope had a traumatic injury to her right front leg, and eventually had it amputated in November.

“It was obvious that she was in pain and that was why she was acting out,” Ivan said.

Following the surgery, Hope is recovering well and adjusting to her new home.

“She has been great for the employees, too,” Ivan said. “They see a lot of tough stuff when they go on critical calls. Now they can come back and cuddle.”
