WHITEFIELD, Maine – An 85-year-old man was hospitalized after using a power saw to intentionally cut off his hand, and resisting help.
Responding deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s department had recently completed first aid training, and applied a tourniquet to the man’s arm before paramedics arrived, WMTW.com reports.
The man “actively resisted” their efforts, according to the Bangor Daily News, but they were able to control the bleeding.
He was airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, then transported to a Boston hospital to undergo surgery to reattach the hand.
