CHICAGO — Two paramedics were injured when an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed into their stopped ambulance early Monday.
Brian Henry, 26, told police he drank “a couple shots” before getting into his Suburban with his wife and another passenger, DNA Info reported.
The ambulance was stopped with its emergency lights on when Henry crashed into it. Paramedics were helping a victim from an earlier crash.
When the ambulance was struck, it spun around and clipped two paramedics, a 23-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, who had minor injuries. The man they were helping had a gash to his forehead that required stitches.
Henry’s wife, 31, suffered broken ribs, a broken left femur and a collapsed lung. She was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. Henry had a broken leg. The 25-year-old in the back of Henry’s car had a brain hemorrhage and was listed in critical condition.
Police said Henry smelled like alcohol. Had bloodshot eyes and spoke with slurred speech. A hospital blood draw reported a .083 blood alcohol concentration
Henry was charged with DUI and aggravated DUI causing accident and bodily harm. He was also cited for driving without insurance, speeding, failing to reduce speed, move over for an emergency vehicle and improper traffic lane usage. He was being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.
