STAFFORDSHIRE, England — Two Staffordshire paramedics were attacked by a drunk they were sent out to assist, a court heard.

Ambulancemen Ray Edensor and Richard Lovatt found the patient lying between parked cars near Cannock town centre.

As they went to attend to the man, Richard Davies, he became violent, kicking out repeatedly with his feet and elbowing them.

When the paramedics said they were going to call the police, Davies got up and ran down the road, tearing off his shirt, said Stephen Redmond, prosecuting.

Mr Lovatt received kicks to his shoulder while Mr Edensor had a damaged tooth and a swollen cheek.

Davies, aged 23, of Littleworth Road, Cannock, who admitted two charges of assault, was given an 18 month community order with 80 hours of unpaid community work.

Recorder Miss Sally Hancox told him: “Your two victims were paramedics, people who work long and difficult shifts waiting for a call to come out and deal with whatever.

“People in your position who need help from family and friends on occasions ought to take more care when out socialising — six pints and not being able to remember where you are, isn’t the best way forward.”

The judge heard that Davies’ friends had called an ambulance because they thought he was having an epileptic fit. He had been in a taxi but got out of the cab feeling unwell before reaching home.

Walter Bealby, defending, told Stafford Crown Court his client’s medical condition needed monitoring.
