DANVILLE, Ill. — A veteran paramedic with a terminal heart disease is in need of a heart transplant.
Paramedic Brandon Curry-Varner, 27, fell ill on his honeymoon two years ago; he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. His condition has worsened since the diagnosis, and doctors said the only option left is to get a new heart.
“Since the disease progressed, I’ve basically maxed out on all medications that I’ve been given,” Curry-Varner said.
Curry-Varner said he will continue to work until he is unable to. “I’ve been able to still work and I’m going to work until I physically can’t,” he said. “I feel like despite the issues that I have going on I still have plenty to give to the people that I serve.”
There are currently 246 people on the heart transplant list in Illinois, according to IllinoisHomePage.
A GoFundMe has been created to help Curry-Varner and his family.
