RALEIGH, N.C. — Kevin Phillips, a 10-year veteran of Wake County’s Emergency Medical Services, normally starts his day as a paramedic by checking the trucks and responding to 911 calls.

But Tuesday was different.

An explosion at the ConAgra plant around 11:30 a.m. caused part of the roof to collapse and leaked anhydrous ammonia into the nearby area. Although the chemical was contained, the explosion killed three people and injured dozens more. Four employees remain in at UNC Hospitals Jaycee Burn Center in critical condition.
