Video: Umpire hit with flying bat, sustains ‘gushing’ head wound

Paul Emmel received stitches after being transported to the hospital

OAKLAND, Calif. — A MLB umpire sustained a gash to the head after a player lost control of his bat during an A’s and Angels game Thursday.

Home plate umpire Paul Emmel was hit in the head when Angels’ pinch-hitter Jefry Marte lost control of his bat. Emmel immediately fell to the ground, where trainers came to his aid.

He was escorted off the field with a towel compressing his wound, and was taken to the hospital, where he received stitches.

“It was really scary,” A’s catcher Stephen Vogt told the East Bay Times. “I heard it and it sounded like somebody hit the ball off the end of the bad, and it was the bat hitting his head. I just turned around right away. He was down and I saw the blood; it was gushing pretty well.”
