MARQUETTE, Mich. — No charges will be filed against the driver of an ambulance that crashed into a semitrailer, killing a nurse and a patient, Marquette County Prosecutor Gary Walker said.
The ambulance was headed from St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba to Marquette General Hospital on March 5 when it collided with the truck, which was parked on the side of U.S. 41.
Registered nurse Lisa Hanson, 32, of Cornell, and patient Carrie Roberts, 38, of Escanaba, were killed.
The driver, Natalia Jauquet, and a paramedic were injured.
Walker said he decided not to charge Jauquet, 25, of Gladstone, after receiving a state police report Wednesday.
He said the snowy weather and slim prospects for a guilty verdict influenced his decision.
“There is little likelihood in my experience that there would have been a conviction,” Walker told The Mining Journal for a Thursday story. “If that’s the case, there is no reason to put the defendant through a criminal trial or for the taxpayers to foot the bill for a criminal trial.”
