Neal Ashburn, 42, a North Platte paramedic and firefighter, lost his battle with cancer Thursday morning.
Ashburn’s fellow firefighters and area residents have been helping the family with fundraisers and other assistance during his two-year fight.
In 2004, during an annual department physical, Ashburn learned his cancer had returned in the form of lung cancer after being in remission for more than 37 years.
Before he was five years old, Ashburn was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and his doctors declared him in remission in the mid-1970’s.
