Mic Gunderson is the president of the Center for Systems Improvement – a consulting firm specializing in design and value improvement for high-risk time-sensitive care.

His prior positions include national director for clinical systems at the American Heart Association; EMS system director for Kent County EMS in Grand Rapids, Mich.; president at Integral Performance Solutions; national director for quality, education and research with the Rural/Metro Corporation; director of research and education with the Office of the Medical Director in the Pinellas County, Fla., EMS system.

Over the course of his career, he served as a field EMT, paramedic and firefighter, clinical manager and director with military, private and governmental EMS agencies. Mic has authored and edited a wide range of articles and textbooks, and has served on the boards of directors for several national EMS organizations.

Mike is currently stationed at Fort Drum, NY with Charlie Company, 3-10 AVN, Mountain DUSTOFF as an Aeromedical Evacuation Officer/Pilot. He flies the UH-60A+ Blackhawk, an air ambulance helicopter that is designed for rapid extrication and transportation of injured troops. He is a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) and a Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM). In the civilian world, Mike has worked in Alabama, Florida and New York as a paramedic/critical care paramedic for a variety of ALS transport agencies. He holds NREMT-P and CCEMT-P certificates as well as BCLS/ACLS/PALS instructor certificates from the AHA, and is a doctoral candidate in public health.

Michael J. Ward, BS, MGA, MIFireE, NREMT-Basic, spent 12 years as an academic, ending as Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University in 2012. He treated patients as an EMT (commercial, volunteer and seasonal) and paid firefighter/paramedic and, during a 25-year career with Fairfax County (Va.) Fire and Rescue, worked in every division of the department, retiring as the acting EMS division administrator. Ward is also a textbook author and conference presenter.

The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) is an organization of physicians and other professionals partnering to provide leadership and foster excellence in the subspecialty of EMS medicine. The NAEMSP promotes meetings, publications and products that connect, serve and educate its members, and acts as an advocate of EMS-related decisions in cooperation with organizations throughout the country.
