ELKRIDGE, Md. — Howard County firefighters were joined by elected officials Monday morning to break ground on a new Elkridge fire station, a facility officials said is overdue and integral to the Elkridge community.

The $13.5-million facility will be at the corner of Montgomery Road and Bauman Drive and is expected to open in the summer of 2016, with construction beginning spring of 2015. It will be 33,757 square feet and will be constructed on a 7.56-acre site that was private property acquired by the county.

The two-story facility will house six bays for emergency vehicles, sleeping quarters for 23, a fitness room, a kitchen and dining room, general use rooms, a training room and offices.
