DETROIT — A Life EMS Ambulance medic who works in the Grand Rapids area was stabbed in the neck by a man that EMS workers sought to help along a Detroit freeway.
The medic had injuries not considered life-threatening and was released from a hospital Wednesday, one day after the Tuesday, Aug. 28 stabbing.
“We are saddened by the unfortunate results of our medics attempting to help an individual near the Novi, Mich., area yesterday evening,” Mark Meijer, president of Life EMS Ambulance wrote in a statement.
It wasn’t immediately clear why the Grand Rapids ambulance workers were in the Detroit area, but state police said the stabbing happened about 5:35 p.m. Tuesday along I-96 at Meadowbrook Road.
A man was seen crawling out the woods and the ambulance workers stopped to help.
Police said the workers loaded the man into the ambulance, but he became combative and stabbed one EMS provider in the neck and tried to stab another provider.
The ambulance personnel then pushed the man out of their rig and locked the doors. A Novi police officer in the area noticed the situation and ended up taking the stabber into custody.
Police believe he may have a mental illness.
The man was taken to the Oakland County Jail pending a review of the case by prosecutors.
