WASHINGTON COUNTY, Texas —A paramedic responded to a call about his wife going into early labor to deliver surrogate babies.

KBTX reported that Washington County EMS paramedic Greg Stump’s wife, Nasreen, was serving as a surrogate for friends who wanted to start a family, and things didn’t quite go as planned.

“It wasn’t how we planned it. I was supposed to have a caesarean,” Nasreen said. “I came downstairs dressed and ready for my husband to pick me up in the ambulance to hopefully have the babies in the hospital. Instead, I wasn’t feeling well so I came into the half bath and had the baby right there.”

Stump said he raced home and gave her instructions over the phone.

“Every medic’s worst nightmare is to get a call to their own home,” he said. “Fortunately, I knew what was going on and I was able to keep a decently cool head. It was raining really, really hard. The fog was very thick. It took us longer to get there than I would have liked. In all honestly, it was as fast as it possibly could have happened. We were about two miles away when we got the news that first baby had come out.”

The couple’s 7-year-old daughter, Aurora, served as midwife while the first baby was born in the bathroom. Stump arrived before the second baby came, which was delivered in the hospital.

“My wife and I have been wanting to be parents for years,” the babies’ father, Craig Rigby, said. “Our good friend Nasreen offered to be a gestational carrier for us. It was really a blessing.”
