Off-duty Del. paramedic pulls man from crashed truck

NEW CASTLE, Del. — An off-duty New Castle County paramedic is being credited with saving an elderly Pennsylvania man from further injury after an accident last night near New Castle.
William Logan pulled 79-year-old Robert Thurma out of a pickup truck that had partially turned over. Seconds later, the truck completed its roll-over.

Logan had finished his shift about an hour before the crash.

When he saw the truck, he smelled gasoline and feared the truck was about to explode.

County paramedics spokeswoman Kelli Starr-Leach says the incident was typical of Logan, a 32-year veteran who once talked a woman from jumping off a bridge.

The pickup truck driver who hit Thurma, 50-year-old Edward Watkins of Wilmington, was charged with driving under the influence.
