PORT CLINTON, Ohio — Donald Mortus trained three generations of firefighters and gave all his working life to the community, creating Port Clinton’s EMS service in 1977 — running the program until he retired in 2003.
At his retirement in 2003, his step daughter Cyndi Jess said Mortus embodied the ideal of “service before self.” Mortus lived the motto, “The rest of us are just learning it.”
Mortus died Monday at age 82, ending his teaching career before many wished, but he touched and taught hundreds to save lives in the greater Port Clinton area. ...
