UC Davis Extension Announces New Emergency Response Aviation Courses

DAVIS, Calif. — The need for well-trained personnel in the field of emergency response aviation is critical. Increasing concerns about the ability to respond safely and efficiently in emergency situations, as well as about the structural health of U.S. emergency response aircraft, have led to the development of a new school-The Emergency Safety Management School. Created by a consortium of university, governmental and private industry experts-such as Bill Larsen and John Zuk of NASA’s Ames Research Center; Dennis Brown, Greg Helsel and Dennis Hulbert of the U.S. Forest Service; Bill Broadwell of American Helicopter Services and the Aerial Firefighting Association, Mike Hill of UC Davis College of Engineering; and Joe Fernandez of UC Davis’ Office of Research; and UC Davis Extension-the school is based at Sacramento’s McClellan Park.

The courses being offered are intended to prepare aviation safety officers, emergency services pilots, forest firefighter aviators, border patrol aviators, medical-air transport personnel, law enforcement, homeland security officers and anyone involved in the field of aviation emergency response. This school delivers world-class aviation training that focuses on the decision-making processes and communication skills and technology required for coordination and cooperation during emergency response incidents, as well as aircraft health monitoring for condition-based maintenance and other critical factors involved in aircraft health management.

The school leverages the facilities available at McClellan-the U.S. Forest Service’s Aerial Simulation Center and state-of-the-art classrooms-to provide students with an experience that allows them to gain the skills to create an emergency aviation response environment that encourages crew member and management collaboration.

This winter quarter two of the seven courses required for the certificate program in Emergency Response Aviation Safety Management, as well as four non-certificate courses, will be offered.
