UNION COUNTY, Ind./ PREBLE COUNTY, Ohio — A school bus with 32 students aboard crashed into a College Corner house on Monday morning, and paramedics performed CPR on the driver.

The crash happened sometime around 7:45 a.m. on Indiana Street, according to dispatchers in Butler County, Ohio, and Union County, Indiana.

The bus was headed east on Indiana Street before it veered left into the gravel drive of Trinity House of Prayer, a Union County, Ind., church at the corner of Stateline and Indiana streets. The bus then ran over a stop sign at the corner before it crashed into a 2,200-square-foot single-story house at 12000 Indiana St. in Preble County, Ohio.

The bus was pinned under the porch after the driver, 55-year-old Steven Posco of Liberty, Ind., appeared to have gone into cardiac arrest and was unconscious, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Department, the lead investigative agency for the crash.

West College Corner Fire Chief Don Jackson said the driver was extricated and taken to Reid Health in Richmond, Ind. The chief said later Monday morning that Posco “is breathing some on his own, and his vital signs are improving.”

There were 32 middle and high school students aboard the bus at the of the crash, which Jackson said happened as the bus was making the loop around an elementary school building on its way to the middle and high school buildings in Liberty, Ind.

None of the students were injured, said Union County College Corner District Interim Superintendent Gregg Pettit.

Students were taken to a nearby church for parents to get them.

“You can imagine with the school bus being involved, and kids ... there’s going to be a lot of investigation,” Jackson said. “The school did an excellent job of accounting for the kids, taking care of the kids; had some counselors there.”

The crash happened on a residential street that is split by the Ohio-Indiana border, and damaged property on both sides of the state line. It also was across the street from College Corner Elementary School. College Corner is within multiple jurisdictions. Not only is the community split by the Ohio-Indiana state line, the east side of the community also is bisected by the Butler- Preble county line.

Paramedics evaluated the children on-site, and all were reported to be OK. The parents of two students said they might take their children to the hospital for further evaluation, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Butler County Technical Rescue had been called in to stabilize the house, and an accident reconstruction team had been requested.

With the number of students on the bus, mutual aid from four departments, including Oxford Fire and Camden EMS, was requested. Jackson said three or four may have struck their heads during the accident but none were taken to the hospital.

Ten agencies responded, which included Union County and Butler County sheriff’s offices, medics from Reid Health, Liberty (Ind.) and Oxford police departments, College Corner, Liberty (Ind.) and Oxford fire departments, Indiana State Police and Ohio State Highway Patrol.
