KERN COUNTY, Calif. — Kern County firefighters rescued a person who had become injured by falling into a vertical mineshaft in the Randsburg area Thursday night.
After being dispatched to the scene shortly before 11 p.m., a crew from the Kern County Fire Department learned two friends had tried to help the person and were unable to climb out.
While the two would-be rescuers were pulled out uninjured, their friend had to be retrieved using a helicopter and a complex system of ropes, according to an agency news release.
Two KCFD firefighters were lowered 120 feet to the person. All three were then lifted to the surface and the person who fell was airlifted to a local hospital.
