BEAR CREEK TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Cottage Hose Ambulance & Rescue Paramedic Edward (Ned) J. Hayes, 71, died Saturday, according to his obituary.

He was treating a patient in the back of an ambulance “when he was stricken ill a few blocks from the hospital,” Cottage Hose Ambulance & Rescue posted on Facebook.

He died a few hours later with family near him.

The EMS agency praised Hayes for his skills, professionalism and humor.

“His loss will be felt by many, especially those patients and the community he served,” the post read.

Hayes began volunteering as an EMT in 1987 and later became a full-time paramedic. He served in that role for 35 years.

He and his wife and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
