EUSTIS, Fla. — Personnel from the Eustis Fire Department were recognized at Eustis City Hall Chambers during the Jan. 17 City Commission meeting.

Two personnel from the Eustis Fire Department, Brad Carroll and Jerry Donaldson received the STEMI Star Award. They were able to identify a STEMI patient and treated that patient within 18 minutes — which broke the previous record of 21 minutes.

Due to their quick action, they were able to save the patient's life.

Firefighter/Paramedic Jerry Donaldson was the lead medic and Firefighter/EMT Brad Carroll was the attending EMT on the scene during the incident.

The STEMI Star Program started in Central Florida in 2014 for hospital staff to recognize and help ensure STEMI patients received treatment in 90 minutes or less. STEMI, which stands for Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction, includes the most severe types of heart attacks.

Five Eustis Fire Department personnel of Engine Strike Team 501 also received recognition for their assistance following Hurricane Michael, one of the largest hurricane responses in Florida. It was the first time the Eustis Fire Department was deployed as part of a national response.

Engine Strike Team 501 included Team Leader Eustis Fire Chief Mike Swanson and the staff of Engine 22, which included Lt. Chuck Messer, Lt. Chad Williamson, Firefighter Kyle Bateman and Firefighter Clay Rich.

They aided the residents of the city of Chattahoochee and Gadsden County with tarping roofs, delivering supplies and much more.
