ST. MARYS, Ga. — A young Georgia firefighter-EMT died suddenly during his first shift at the fire department on Saturday, officials say.

St. Marys Firefighter-EMT Efren Medina, 20, had just been hired and responded to a medical call during his first shift early Saturday morning, according to WOKV. The crew returned to the station at about 3:30 a.m., and at about 7:30 a.m. firefighters were unable to wake Medina back up, according to St. Marys Fire Chief Tom Lackner.

Lackner said Medina had passed his physical and he did not know what could have caused the young firefighter's death.

Medina is survived by his wife Brittany Vasquez. An online fundraiser has been set up to assist with funeral costs.

"Efren was a wonderful brother, son, husband, and friend to all," the fundraiser description reads. "He was very caring, cheerful, and hardworking."
