Tourniquets have proven to be an indispensable tool in cases of severe life threatening bleeding from an extremity wound. Tourniquets are most effective at saving lives due to massive hemorrhage if applied prior to the onset of shock. If direct pressure fails to control severe bleeding the decision to apply a tourniquet should be made quickly.
