SARASOTA, Fla. – Community members, coworkers and family honored fallen retired firefighter-paramedic Wes Weysham in a funeral service at Sarasota National Cemetery on Tuesday.

FOX 13 reported that a number of people attended the service of Weysham, a Navy veteran, who was killed after stopping to help a motorist on the side of a road after a crash.

The motorist was allegedly impaired, and while Weysham was assisting him, another crash occurred, the impact of which pushed the stopped motorist’s car into Weysham, killing him.

Weysham’s colleagues spoke highly of him during the service.

“We’re remembering a person who gave basically the better part of his life to community service, someone who we want to remember as a community servant,” Chief Michael Regnier said.

In addition to serving as a firefighter and paramedic, after retirement, Weysham also volunteered as a K9 handler and navigator with Sarasota K9 Search and Rescue. His K-9 partner, Ranger, was even in attendance to say goodbye to his handler.

“Attention all units: It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of firefighter paramedic Wes Weysham,” a dispatcher announced. “The bell has been struck for his last alarm. May the sunshine shine upon his back and may the Lord hold him in the palm of his hand until we meet again.”
