Salt Lake City—Priority Dispatch Corp.™ (PDC™) is pleased to announce that Jay Dornseif, a Priority Dispatch System™ (PDS™) Fire Program Administrator and veteran fire professional, has been selected to chair the global National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Committee for Professional Qualifications for Public Safety Telecommunication Personnel.
Founded in 1896, the NFPA develops the codes, standards, research, training, and education for the fire service internationally and has 70,000 members worldwide.
Dornseif, who is also a member of the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch’s® (IAED™) Fire Council of Standards and Curriculum Board, has been an NFPA member for 20 years. Since 2006, Dornseif has served as a key representative of the Committee for Professional Qualifications for Public Safety Telecommunication Personnel, also referred to as NFPA 1061.
“Jay has been heavily involved in making fire dispatch more accurate, effective, and scientific through his dedicated work both here and at the NFPA,” said Dr. Jeff Clawson, creator of the emergency dispatch protocols. “His understanding of the emergency fire dispatching process is second to none.”
As NFPA 1061’s Chair, Dornseif will be instrumental in leading NFPA 1061’s mission to develop the minimum job performance requirements for all personnel at emergency communication centers around the world. The committee’s tasks also include developing training programs that will help emergency telecommunicators at every level meet those minimum standards, which are revised and updated every three years.
“We’re obviously pleased that Jay has been recommended and approved by the NFPA Standards Council,” said Tom McGowan, Senior Staff Specialist and Staff Liaison for NFPA’s Professional Quality Documents that includes the 1061 Committee. “Jay has a wealth of knowledge and interest that he brings to the committee. We look forward to him leading the 1061 Committee and his efforts going forward.”
Dornseif also serves on the NFPA’s 1221 Committee, which provides minimum standards for the day-to-day performance operations of emergency communication centers.
“I’m excited about being the Chair and look forward to working with the committee to put out minimum standards for communication center personnel,” Dornseif said. “For me, the motivation is the affect that the committee’s efforts has on emergency telecommunicators , but for the NFPA, it’s the fire safety that our work provides for people worldwide. Communication center staff members need professional training just as much as the responders that they dispatch.”
