Drunk EMT steals ambulance on 21st birthday

Dispatch contacted him on the two-way radio and asked him to return the vehicle; he was complying when police spotted him

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — An EMT and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) pre-med student was arrested on charges of stealing an ambulance after celebrating his 21st birthday.

Ryan Kovacik was charged with DUI, possession of stolen property and grand larceny after getting behind the wheel of an ambulance parked at VCU Medical Center on Sunday, WTVR.com reports.

Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad providers were inside the hospital, and walked out to find the vehicle missing. Dispatch contacted Kovacik on the ambulance’s two-way radio said Andy Inge, vice president of Lakeside Rescue.

“The conversation was, ‘Hey, we know you have it, please bring it back or stop where you are’ and the person apparently responded,” Inge said. “Kind of surprised that he was actually returning it to the building. He was en route to the building when Henrico Police spotted him based on a ‘be on the lookout’ report.

Kovacik was arraigned Monday morning and released on a bond. The case has been transferred to VCU for possible disciplinary action.
