Job Description

Teaches assigned classes and performs instructional duties in diverse learning environments. Responsibilities will include designing and preparing for course assignments, maintaining scheduled office hours, student placement and performance assessments, student conferences, grading student work, and providing academic advisement. It is expected that faculty maintain current professional standards and practices, as well as attend committee/department meetings, and support the mission of SFCC and the School of Sciences, Health, Engineering and Math. Must be committed to serving a diverse college community.

**Minimum Qualifications: **

  • Possession of a valid EMT-Paramedic license from the State of New Mexico or ability to obtain prior to start date.
  • Associates degree in EMS, Paramedicine, Education or related field.
  • New Mexico Joint Organization for Education (JOE) approved Instructor/Coordinator or equivalent, or ability to obtain prior to start date.
  • Three years of relevant clinical experience or a combination of education and/or experience totaling six years.
  • Minimum of four years appropriate prehospital work experience at the Advanced Life Support level.
  • Obtain (within one year of employment) certification as an American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor.
  • Teaching experience in a higher education environment.

Current and demonstrated knowledge in applicable course content; knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices; of diverse learning styles; of tutorial units and related instructional learning laboratories; of evaluation methodologies; of record keeping; and of curriculum design and planning. Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Skill in problem solving; in time management; in listening and in critical thinking. Must have a sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, special needs, and ethnic backgrounds of college students. Ability to communicate information and ideas; and to speak clearly.

Job Duties

  1. Conducts assigned classes in accordance with approved course syllabi and the New Mexico JOE requirements and the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) and Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs standards.

  2. Develops and coordinates student clinical experiences with the EMSI Clinical Coordinator.

  3. Develops and updates curriculum as needed, in collaboration with, and under supervision of, EMSI Program Director.

  4. Advises students on completing their academic goals and navigating SFCC systems.

  5. Works with Counseling, Student Accessibility Services and other SFCC departments, making referrals as necessary.

  6. Submits required reports by deadlines.

  7. Acquaints students with course content, requirements, grading procedures, and attendance policy.

  8. Maintains and submits to Department chair up-to-date course outlines and assessment materials.

  9. Actively seeks and employs methods to improve instruction, keeping abreast of professional education developments.

  10. Maintains approved schedule of office hours.

  11. Assists in the choice of textbooks and other instructional materials that are appropriate to the course syllabi.

  12. Creates curriculum and assessment instruments; uses appropriate technology in teaching.

  13. Attends and supports college activities; participates in faculty, division, college-wide, and other meetings and functions; serves on committees.

  14. Develops and selects materials and methods for faculty to use in teaching and assessing EMS courses.

  15. Mentors Adjunct Faculty.

  16. May supervise student employees and tutors.

  17. Provides leadership and professional development opportunities for adjunct faculty.

  18. Collaborates with other faculty and staff in the School and across the college.

  19. Assumes special duties assigned by the EMSI Program Director, Dean of Sciences, Health, Engineering and Math and/or designated representatives.

Job Requirements

  • Age: N/A
  • Education: Minimum of Associates degree, Bachelor's preferred
  • Experience: Three years

**Preferred Qualifications: **

  • A minimum of 150 hours of teaching experience at the Advanced Life Support level while under the supervision of a Paramedic instructor/coordinator.

  • Previous experience instructing EMS initial licensure courses at the Paramedic level.

  • Bachelor’s degree in EMS, Emergency Management, Education or related field.

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Instructor (PALS), Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support Instructor (PHTLS), Advanced Medical Life Support Instructor (AMLS).
