BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Four people were hospitalized after an ambulance transporting a patient was involved in a crash with two other vehicles on Highway 280 near Grandview Parkway in Birmingham Monday night, officials said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Sebastian Carrillo said the ambulance was transporting a patient in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 280 when it collided with another vehicle. The crash caused the ambulance to cross into the westbound lanes and strike another vehicle head-on, he said.

The two medics and the patient in the ambulance were taken to an area hospital. An occupant of the vehicle that was struck head-on was also taken to an area hospital.

Carrillo said one of the victims sustained substantial injuries. The extent of the other three victims’ injuries are not known at the time.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The crash caused a road closure and significant traffic delays along Highway 280.
