Teenager, driver die in bus crash that left part of Pa. highway closed for hours

Air and ground ambulances transported several injured students to Pittsburgh hospitals

MUDDY CREEK TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A 14-year-old girl and a 31-year-old school bus driver died Tuesday afternoon when the bus and a tractor-trailer crashed on Interstate 79.

The bus was carrying students from the Lincoln Performing Arts Charter School home from school, Action News 4 reported.

Several injured students were transported to Pittsburgh hospitals by air and ground ambulances. Five who were taken to Children’s Hospital had nonlife-threatening injuries, WPXI 11 News reported. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the events that took place this afternoon, and our thoughts and our prayers are with all of those students and our driver who is involved in the accident,” said Richard Grimes, president of the school’s board of directors.

The northbound portion of the highway was closed for the rest of the afternoon and into night for cleanup and investigation, CDLife reported.
