ANDERSON, Ind. — A Michigan man who began drilling his own skull after crashing into a guard rail in an apparent suicide attempt is not expected to survive his injuries.
Earl Morgan III, 29, drove into a guard rail on Interstate 69 at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Police spokesman Joel Sandefur told the Herald Bulletin that a witness saw Morgan get out of the damaged car, pull a power drill from the trunk, and start boring into his head behind his right ear. Traffic was backed up for several hours.
He was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital, then flown by helicopter to St. Vincent Indianapolis. A former resident of LePeer, Mich., Sandefur said Morgan had recently moved to Indianapolis.
Police are investigating the motives behind the incident.
