MASARDIS, Maine — Two men escaped serious injury on Thursday after a moose entered the roadway and ended up causing damage to two vehicles.
State police Sgt. Brian Harris said Friday that the incident took place at approximately 5 a.m. on Route 11.
According to Harris, Steven Cyr of Ashland was southbound in his 2005 Chevy pickup when a moose crossed in front of his vehicle.
Cyr struck the moose in the southbound lane but veered into the northbound lane and stopped his vehicle in the roadway.
As he got out to check the damage, Travis Blair of Ashland was northbound in his 2007 Nissan.
Cyr saw him and attempted to flag him down but Blair was unable to see him due to the fog and low light conditions.
Harris said that Blair’s vehicle hit Cyr’s vehicle head on.
Air bags deployed in Blair’s vehicle and he suffered a broken kneecap and other minor injuries.
He was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
He was taken from the scene by the Ashland Ambulance Department to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.
Cyr did not require medical attention.
Trooper Shawn Whalen investigated the crash and was assisted at the scene by the Ashland and Masardis Fire Departments.
