Tenn. man dies after SUV hits school bus; 10 hurt

LEBANON, Tenn. — A head-on collision outside Nashville between a sport utility vehicle and a bus carrying high school band members has left a 60-year-old man dead and 10 others injured.

Authorities said Michael L. Henry, of Pleasant Shade, Tenn., was killed when the 1998 Dodge Durango he was driving struck a school bus carrying Oakland High School band members around 10 a.m. Saturday.

Tennessee Highway Patrol spokeswoman Dalya Qualls says a preliminary investigation found the SUV crossed the center line of a rural road and struck the bus head-on.

The 31-year-old female bus driver was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Eight of the nine students taken to a hospital were treated and released. The remaining student doesn’t have life-threatening injuries.

John Jewell of the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency says “it was very fortunate in one respect that there weren’t more hurt. It was just a very, very intense impact.”
