Building was under demolition as part of new courthouse construction project

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A little after 4 p.m. today, portions of the West Parking Garage on Southeast Sixth Street in Fort Lauderdale, part of the Broward County Courthouse complex, collapsed. Two individuals suffered minor abrasions. There was no collateral damage.

“Our primary concern is safety of courthouse workers and visitors in the immediate area,” said Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry. “There have been no life-threatening injuries reported. We are closely monitoring the situation as the contractor works to mitigate the area and clear debris.”

The garage is part of a secure construction site operated by James A. Cummings, Inc. The building was under demolition as part of the new courthouse construction project. Portions of the garage had already been removed, including those that were attached to the Central and West sections of the Main Courthouse. Explosives are not being used in the demolition process.

Portions of Southeast Sixth Street will be closed as the contractor and construction crews work to mitigate the area. Lanes are expected to reopen later tonight.
