COLUMBIA, Mo. — A man brought to University of Missouri Hospital by state troopers escaped Thursday in a stolen ambulance.

Sean M. Smith, 40, was arrested about an hour after he left the hospital at the Midway Auto Plaza on Highway 40, the university stated in a press release.

MU issued an alert at 4 p.m. warning that a 40-year-old man was wanted for stealing an ambulance at the hospital from St. James and was last seen near Ashland Road near the MU campus.

The ambulance was found a few minutes later and Smith was reported to have fled on foot.

“Smith had originally been brought to MU Health Care by the Missouri Highway Patrol, which had stopped him for a traffic violation,” the university release stated. “The stop had resulted in a pursuit that ended in Cooper County. He had been brought to the hospital to check for injuries.”
