BROWNSVILLE, Texas — An ambulance that was stolen out of Brownsville has been recovered in Mexico, according to the Brownsville Police Department.

On Aug. 4, the Brownsville Police Department and Brownsville Fire/EMS responded to an emergency call for a person who complained of abdominal pain and requested to be transported to a hospital.

As EMS arrived, the caller then unexpectedly jumped into the driver’s seat of the ambulance and sped away from the scene, police said. The suspect proceeded to drive the ambulance toward the international border, where he crashed into barriers before driving into Matamoros, Mexico.

A spokesperson for the Tamaulipas State Police told KRGV that during “security and surveillance patrols” in Matamoros, they received a report from security personnel at the Brownsville & Matamoros Express International Bridge.

The spokesperson added that protocols were immediately activated, and the stolen ambulance was later found abandoned near the San Joaquin Funeral Park.

No EMS providers or bystanders were injured in this incident.
