OnStar ignores 89-year-old’s call for help, family says

The family of the man said OnStar refused to help the man, who was the subject of a statewide missing persons search, because he wasn’t a subscriber

GREECE, N.Y. — The family of an 89-year-old who went missing said OnStar ignored his request for help because he wasn’t a subscriber.

Anthony DePinto went missing after leaving his home Thursday, 13WHAM reported.

DePinto didn’t have a cellphone but pushed the OnStar button in his car. OnStar told him there was nothing it could do for him because he didn’t have a subscription.

“They could definitely make a 911 call. There is no excuse. It’s unacceptable,” DePinto son-in-law Tom Michaels said.

DePinto kept on driving while a statewide missing adult search ensued. He was finally found by sheriff deputies in Parma, about 8 miles away from his house.

OnStar told 13WHAM that they cannot locate a car unless the person driving it is a subscriber. In that case, they call authorities. They were not sure, however, if DePinto’s call was passed on to police.
